TRAILER
The British Comedy Weekend trailer for Channel 4 deliberately plays with classic symbols of Britishness, transforming them into a surreal landscape of satire and irony. The setting deliberately references famous British television productions, creating visual references that viewers can immediately recognize.
Classic symbols such as the Big Ben, the red telephone box, the iconic car from Mr. Bean and the flying old-fashioned plane and the background from Monty Python are juxtaposed in a slightly worn, worn-out way. The tired atmosphere are subtle nods to Monty Python’s absurdist humour, while the dated restaurant evokes the atmosphere of Only Fools and Horses and the cheerful green bus nods to Holiday on the Buses. Each element shows signs of wear and tear, enhancing the comedic contrast between nostalgic Britishness and contemporary satire.
The absurdity and surrealism are clearly emphasized by the Queen, literally depicted as a fish in a crown, in the style of Spitting Image and Monty Python . The dated 80s décor typical of Fawlty Towers and the goose waiter serving battered fish, which subtly refers to the queen fish, deepen the surreal atmosphere and introduce an element of black humor and grotesque
The comedy in this piece comes from a mix of silence and timing – awkward pauses, the queen’s blank stare at the camera, and the goose’s casual attitude all build up a kind of deadpan tension that feels very British. The trailer plays on the tradition of sketches like Monty Python, The League of Gentlemen, or The Mighty Boosh, where everyday banality gets twisted into the bizarre and absurd. That mix of awkwardness, self-awareness, and sharp satire is what makes British comedy so unique, and the project is a small tribute to that spirit.
The illustrations were mainly created with vector techniques and collage, combining cut-out elements with clean shapes. The reference photos are shown alongside the final illustrations to highlight how they were reworked into the design.
